Public Input Requested for Chippewa N.F.
Dec. 3, 2003
The Blackduck District of the Chippewa National Forest has released initial details on the Rambling Woods Resource Management Project and are accepting public input on this proposed project through December 10, 2003. The project area encompasses 103,378 acres (44,752 acres are National Forest land) between Blackduck and Cass Lake in the northwestern corner of the Forest. Proposed activities include, among other things, treating 1691 acres of aspen (largely by clearcutting), regenerating birch, thinning red pine plantations and maintaining 186 wildlife openings (495 acres). There will be minor conversions of forest type to align types with local soils. Aspen management will include concentrated efforts around four hunter walking trails in the area. The Ruffed Grouse Society worked very closely with the District Ranger in the development of this project, and we are very pleased with the proposal. We support the proposed alternative and feel the District should be commended for this decision.
In other news, MN DNR has formed a grouse committee, posted a job opening for a grouse biologist and is discussing the possibility of future dedicated grouse management/research money - all very positive changes in this administration.
An end of the year progress report on RGS activities will be forthcoming.
